10 Year Guarantee on all GRP Products

Every GRP product we supply carries a 10 year guarantee. This page explains why we are comfortable offering it, what tends to determine how long an installation actually lasts, and how to get in touch if something is not right.

Why we can guarantee GRP for 10 years

Glass reinforced plastic does not corrode, rot or rust. There is no steel core to bleed rust stains, no timber to soften and split, and no painted film to flake off at the step edge. The grit is bonded into the moulded surface rather than applied on top, so it wears down with the panel instead of peeling away from it.

That matters most in exactly the places these products get used: external steps, fire escapes, loading bays, marinas, farms, water treatment sites and anywhere that gets rain, frost, salt or cleaning chemicals. Those are the conditions that shorten the life of every alternative material.

How GRP compares with the alternatives

MaterialTypical failure modeMaintenance
GRPGradual surface wear over many yearsNone beyond cleaning
TimberRot, splitting, algae growth, loose fixingsSealing or treating, periodic replacement
Mild steelCorrosion, particularly at cut edges and weldsRepainting or galvanising
Anti-slip paintWears through at the nosing line firstRecoating every few years
Anti-slip tapeEdges lift, adhesive fails when wetFrequent replacement

This is also why Approved Document M asks for a permanently contrasting material on step nosings rather than simply a contrasting one. We cover that in our guide to UK stair nosing regulations.

What determines how long your installation lasts

In our experience three things make the difference, and all of them are decided before the product is fitted.

  • The right product for the loading. A pedestrian grating panel used where forklifts run will not last. Tell us what will be crossing it and how often, and we will point you at the right depth and mesh.
  • The right fixings, properly used. Our nosings, covers and sheets come pre-drilled with fixings supplied. Where adhesive is specified as well as mechanical fixing, both matter. Skipping one is the most common cause of an edge lifting early.
  • Cutting to size rather than on site. We cut free of charge in our own facility, which leaves a clean sealed edge. A rough site cut can leave exposed fibres that weather faster.

If something is not right

Call us on 01480 570001 or email info@safetyproductsdirect.co.uk with your order number and a photograph of the problem. We would rather hear about it early, while it is a small job to put right.

For the full written terms of the guarantee, including what is and is not covered, please ask us and we will send them to you. Our general trading terms are on our terms and conditions page.

Before you order

We send free samples of our GRP and aluminium products so you can check the grit and the colour against the actual surface before committing, and we cut to size free of charge. If you would rather we fitted it, we have installation teams around the country.
